Week 2 – Most Likely to Succeed & Trello

Over the weekend I watched the documentary Most Likely to Succeed which I found was really interesting. I thought that the history and inspiration behind the charter school were really unique as they were aiming to put a new twist on education and schools. One thing I didn’t like about the school was that each teacher had freedom on what project they assign for the term. This was a little concerning to me because I’m not sure that each child is guaranteed to learn the same material. Another aspect of the school I didn’t agree with was the group work. I believe group work is important for character building and a good life tool. However, there is a time and a place for it and I don’t feel that each project should be done in groups. Students need to develop autonomy and independence, how can that be done if they’re primarily, if not exclusively working in groups.

Today we set up a Trello account and organized our profile to set up lists and lists within those lists! I found that Trello was user-friendly and had clear organized categories making it easy to create categories. I think the pros of Trello are that it has a very simplistic look and isn’t overwhelming to set up.  I liked that I could add a checklist to keep myself on top of my blog posts. This I feel would be a great tool for university-level students to help them organize each of their classes and their assignments. I emphasize university students as the database is in the United States and for privacy reasons, I would only recommend it to adults who know how to manage their private information online. One con about the Trello checklist is that you have to be on top of it and actually check your items off, you could make millions of lists with millions of items on them but if you aren’t checking things off and actually accomplishing them it defeats the purpose of checklists.
